“The Altman” Loar Series F-5 Varnish Mandolin

New - We are now the exclusive dealer for Altman mandolins out of Georgia and this instrument specifications are taken directly from Hershel Sizemore’s 1923 Lloyd Loar and is as close as can be obtained. Only the finest materials are used in this series such as the 220 year old Adirondack Spruce from West Virginia (many details), beautiful flamed one piece Maple back, sides & neck, grained Ivoroid bound Ebony fingerboard, triple bound body, bound headstock with traditional Abalone & Pearl “Flowerpot” inlay, Ebony traditional full contact bridge, 1 1/16’’ Pearl nut, traditional Cremona sunburst varnish finish, Waverly chrome tuners with Pearl buttons and “James” tailpiece with engraved “The Altman” logo. The overall sound of this instrument is smooth, rich and vibrant as if were played for decades. The low end is “silky” warm and very resonant, the midrange “pops & pings” with extreme cutting power and the high end screams with clarity with warm edge which in turn makes for a most pleasing balance. The “chop” anywhere on the neck emits that “woof” directly out of the chamber. This description of sound can be heard on You Tube while Hershel is playing both his Loar and this one. Again the same specifications with the exception of the abbreviated fingerboard extension. Before purchasing any upper tier instrument, do yourself a huge favor and play this one as it is very serious and contains a lot of “magic.” Priced with deluxe hard case.

Grundy Custom “Flintriver” Maple

New - An absolute stunning instrument in more ways than one and this one has some very unique features as well. Each one of “Flintriver” models is a one of a kind with different inlay patterns and designs. This one has a peghead inlay of a Confederate soldier holding a Rebel flag & rifle in gray and dark Pearl with the flag in Pearl & Turquoise. The fingerboard is exquisitely inlaid with Pearl & Abalone designs and crossings swords in Pearl & Turquoise between the 11th and 12th frets. All the inlay work is some of the finest detail we have ever seen. The wood used on the resonator and neck is profusely flamed Maple as the neck is liken unto a “Tiger’s Tail” and the resonator appears to have an almost 3D effect. One very unique feature is the one piece solid Maple rim which means only there is only one glue joint, the first we’ve seen. Rather having three pieces of wood with several glued joints that can hinder sound, the one piece will allow for more vibration & sound transfer. The finish on this instrument is “Bell Bronze” with the exception of the tuners and the hooks which are gold plated and will take on a natural “patina.” The rest of the best is the Gundy flathead tone ring, one piece flange and tension hoop all formulated from a 1934 RB-4 once owned by Earl Scruggs, bound Ebony fingerboard, Maple 5/8’’ bridge with Ebony insert, 1 1/8’’ bone nut width thumb screws with Pearl inserts, and triple bound resonator. It will be very difficult to find a higher quality instrument with the features Laurie Grundy has displayed in his work in regards to beauty, highest grade of materials and outstanding craftsmanship than these offered here. Last but more important is the sound and that is old warm, sweet, open, powerful and robust. “Simply Outstanding.” Priced with deluxe hard case.
